DEFEAT Your Gremlin

Updated: Dec 26, 2019

Not long ago I started my business. I started with great passion and enthusiasm and this carried me for many months. Then, as is always the case, the "Gremlin" snuck in.

The Gremlin is a term used for those thoughts that come to you, telling you in one way or another that "you are not good enough." You don't have the skill, the talent, the ability, the creativity, the passion, the personality or the attributes to accomplish your dream! This may be a real voice from a real person, or most likely, the inner voice.

So what do you do?

I'll tell you what I did - I believed him! Yup, this is not what I wanted to do, but I did it anyways. The result: I got stuck. I really didn't feel like I could actually achieve my dream goals, so I stopped working towards them.

Obviously this is not good!

After giving the Gremlin his time, I decided to do something about it. I decided that I had had enough of his bullying, his pronouncements about my abilities, his rudimentary justifications of my inadequacies. So, I put him on trial.

I listed out on paper every single argument that he had made. I then wrote out all of the factual things, the actual evidence the he had to support his arguments. Finally, I counter-argued with evidence all of the reasons why his accusations were not true.

And the jury said - the Gremlin is a liar!

What was really amazing about this experience is that it was quite a motivator for me. I noticed that although I had to be honest with myself (which was hard), I gained more self-confidence, was able to remove a lot of my self-doubt and and developed great hope for the future.

Perhaps you have had some of the same feelings. If you have, I challenge you to take the Gremlin to court and defeat him with all of the evidence of how amazing you really are!
